The biggest island in the archipelago of Los Roques is called "Gran Roque". Located to the north, this is where most of the population lives. Its also here where the airport is located, as well as all the inns (posadas), the school...
The airport is located by the sea, just a few meters from the beach. When you get down from the plane, you must go through the national park authority and pay the entrance fee.
Most of the streets of Los Roques are made of sand. This is why you can see so many people walking barefoot. Houses and inns exhibit their colors, giving the island a joyful look.
Streets are decorated in a very simple way with local materialssuch as old boats or shells, as you can see in an inn entrance and a Christmas tree below.

The sea, with colors that go from turquoise to dark blue, is always close from the village. Whenever you feel like it, you can take a plunge in those crystalline waters.
Something you must do if you visit Los Roques is to take a walk to the old light house that dominates the island. It is a short walk and not to hard that you can do in less than 30 minutes. The view is worth the trip! To then north you will see a strong sea (which is different from almost all the beaches in Los Roques), and to the south the village of Gran Roque.
A piece of advice: In the main road of Gran Roque, there is a small place where a lady called Agripina prepares delicious "empanadas" filled with different options like cheese, meat or lobster. Don't miss the latter!
Posada La Gaviota at Los Roques Beach is a Superior posada with capacity for 15 persons. Is located on the main island of the Archipelago, only 20 meters distance from the beach, with uninterrupted views of the islands and it´s spectacular sunsets The posada is a house owned since 1974 and after remodelling it in 2001 the couple decided to receive guests whom they attended personally. It offers all the modern facilities to its customers.The posada is nicely decorated with simple but beautiful taste which makes it very cozy.
