Panoramic view of La Asunción. At the bottom, the Matasiete hill
The capital of Nueva Esparta, where the Isla of Margarita belongs to, is La Asunción. The legislative palace and municipal palace are there. It is a nice city, quiet, with some streets exclusive for pedestrians. Take a walk in the city and discover its churches, the streets with trees and surprise yourself with the Crafts Gallery with its shops and places to have a nice fruit juice.

Very close to La Asunción, in the road that leads to Los Robles, Palo Sano sector, you find a very pleasant surprise, the “Tropical Maze”, a garden with several plant species that grow on the island. In fact, there are two mazes where you can have fun just trying to look out for the exit. The park was created in 1998, by Roberto Erenfeld and Julio Susana, taking advantage of some wells that help providing the gardens of the water they need.

A “Macaurel” boa(snake) with a tourist
At the end of the tour, there is an animal refuge, with several birds, turtles and snakes. The mayor attraction is a Macaurel boa, very domesticated, and also a dirty face parrot, very sociable. Tourists receive a plate of tropical fruits, that in our case, we shared with a toucan. When there are foreigner tourist groups, there is also a demonstration of how to climb to a coconut tree to get the coconuts.
