Sunset in Pedernales

Sunset in Pedernales
Sunset in Pedernales

While the sun is about to sink in the horizon, the sky turns shiny gold in Pedernales. This is the northeastern coast of the Orinoco Delta where the quietude of the waters of the Gulf of Paria, meets the fresh waters of the delta and the salty waters of the Atlantic Ocean whose strong current penetrates the Mouth of The Serpents, between Trinidad Island and Venezuela.

The Warao Indian sites and the populations of Pedernales and Capure are the original human settlements in this place. Nailed new on the water, as iron islands, imitating the ingenious palafitos of the Warao, are the Oilrig platforms showing the value of the black gold cached in the subsoil.

The gilded sunset sky of Pedernales is full of thousands of egrets and corocoras in hasty return to their rookery in Cotorra Island, just of the coast of Pedernales. These are the egrets, anhingas, pelicans, coro-coras and cormorants that after a day of active food seeking need to find a mangrove twig on which to rest.

The sunset of Pedernales is filled with bird life in feverish activity. Such is the life of the delta, where the swamps rob space from the sea.
