The Pigmy Owl

The Pigmy Owl
The Pigmy Owl

Among the twenty Venezuelan owl species, the Pigmy Owl, locally called Pavita, has the bad reputation of being responsible for announcing, the arrival of bad luck with their call. Upon listening to its feared and obscure call, it is believed that things will not be as they should anymore.

The Pavita is one of the smallest owls. As opposed to the Barn and Screech Owls, the pavitas show diurnal habits, just as the Burrowing Owls do. However, their huge pupils, allow them to clearly see in the dark of the night.

The pavita does not develop the auricular tuft plumage that, most of the large Owls exhibit, at each side of their heads. The photograph shows a juvenile, distinguishable by the dark and clear striping of his incipient plumage. Upon maturing, his head will maintain the same circular silhouette but colors will surely change.

The Barn Owls, Screech Owls, and the pavitas are effective predators and natural controllers of rodent populations all over the world. So, instead of looking at these animals as enemies, we must recognize the benefit they offer us by feeding on rats and mice.
