The Giant Fenrs

Originating during the Carboniferous, some 300 million years ago, these giant ferns, probably served as food to prehistoric beasts, and survived due to their ability to synthesize complex secondary organic poisonous substances to avoid being the food of hervibores.

Nowadays, they serve as food to few animals and you only some parasites, commensals or predatore are known. Livestock doesn't use it as forage, and no vertebrate is known to use its trunk or the dense umbrella like fronds like food.

These ferns of arboreal behavior present a reinforced shaft, which is the product of compaction of the roots that sustain their beautiful frond, by way of a crown of compound leaves. Their silhouette is that of a parasol of thin green filigree, barely visible in dense vegetation and contrasting in the forest fog.

When very old, they grow up to about twenty meters high. The arboreal ferns are known in the world from some 700 species belonging to only two families. They grow very well in steep slopes, highway borders and do very well in the sunny areas, showing the their beauty to whoever comes by.
