The Tocuyo was founded in 1545 by Juan Carvajal, being one of the oldest cities in the country. It was so important that it was the capital of the General Captaincy of Venezuela between 1546 and 1548.The Church of the Immaculate Conception, one of the most beautiful in the country, is in this city.

The fertile soil is ideal for growing agricultural products such as sugar cane, because of the combination of its weather, both dry and warm, along with plenty of water provided by the river, El Tocuyo. In fact, it is one of four places in the world where the cultivation of sugar cane be done all year.

The land of El Tocuyo also produces tomatoes, onions, peppers, alfalfa and potatoes in abundance, making El Tocuyo one of the most important agricultural centers of Venezuela.
