Casa Fuerte (Strong house)

Casa Fuerte (strong house) is a national historic monument. Initially constructed as a convent, in 1811 during the independence war, it was taken by the founders of the republic and turned into a fortification by SImon Bolivar to defend the city from the attacks of his opponents. After several attacks the house was taken and destroyed in 1817. It stands now as a reminder of the independence spirit. There is a statue of Eulolia Buroz, a woman who died in its defense.

Puerto La Cruz

This city is one of Venezuela's top tourist destination. The beaches that surround Puerto La Cruz, such as Isla de Plata, Conoma and Arapito are beautiful. Puerto La Cruz is also the entry point of Mochima National Park, one of the most spectacular in the country. From its port, you can take a ferry to Margarita Island. You can (and should) also hire a boat that will take you to the neighboring islands, such as Las Chimanas, Cachicamo and Borracha.
