Hato Piñero (Farm Piñero)
Hato Piñero is both a prime nature destination and a cattle farm of approximately 80.000 hectares (800 Km2) located in the Venezuelan plains (llanos) southwest region of the Cojedes state, which is at the frontier of the state Barinas and Guarico.
It has 25.000 livestock and is used exclusively for the meat production. The cattle is of the Brahma, "Romocinuano", Senepol, Nelord and native type. A new genetic type of cattle, known as "Rojo Piñereiro" has been produced in this farm that is highly recognized for its research in artificial insemination. The Branger foundation was founded in the year 1982. Approximately 50% of its total extension is dedicated to the natural reserve of flora and fauna. The Piñero farm is a clear example that a sustainable development can be done protecting nature and at the same time making a rational exploitation. In that same year the lodge was founded so that tourists could observe and study the different species of flora and fauna. There is an inventory of approximately 374 species of birds. As of the animals, in addition to the famous kapybara (typical animal of Venezuela, the biggest rodent of the world)., you can also see the babas (small alligators, fox, jaguars, pumas, cunaguaros (small tigers), margays, jaguarandies, palm trees bears and honey bears, tapirs, raccoons, limpets, "picures" (rodent, similar to the kapybara but smaller), weasels, etc. See some birds | See some animals | See Landscapes
In the rivers you can also see different river dolphins and species of fish among which you can find the piranhas (experience a piranha fishing excursion) and the "pavon" (local river fish), as well as rays, and tembladores (typical fish of the tropical rivers that produce electricity). In relation to turtles, there are fresh water tortoises, "matamatas" and "morrocoyes". There is also a specie of snake called anaconda. The visit of the farm Piñero during the rain season is completely different from the dry season. During the rainy season there is a lot of water and 60% of the farm remains under water for 3 months and that part can not be visited. The animals go throughout the farm. The landscape colors in all the shades of green. During summer you can see more animals because they concentrate in the few spaces were there is still water, thus allowing visitors a better observation of the animals.
The farm Piñero is the ideal place for the bird watchers, for whom special tours are made at dawn and at sunset in the appropriate places.
Another important aspect of the Piñero Farm and explanation for the existence of the big variety of fauna and flora is due to the enormous quantity of ecosystems to be found: high plains, low plains, primary woods, gallery and savannah forests.
Due to the big dimensions of the farm (there are 200 Kms of internal roads) tourists are sent in special trucks to make the tour. These trucks are specially conditioned so that the passengers can comfortably travel with 360 degree of visibility. You can also take a horseback riding excursion and participate in the different activities of the Llanos that take place in the farm. |

Day excursions are organized. In the morning, after a nice breakfast, and until approximately 11:30, and then in the afternoon, after the siesta at approximately 4:00 PM, depending of the distance of the place that you can visit. You can also take an excursion so as to come back in the night and watch the felines and the night birds. The idea is to wait for those beautiful sunsets of the Llanos at the appropriate places.

The nature guides are well prepared and know perfectly well the animal species and the places where to find them. Also they care for all the small details so that the visit to the farm becomes an unforgettable experience. Their sympathy and good service delight the passenger. Food, served as a buffet, is excellent, varied and well balanced. The rooms are comfortable, many of them are provided with air conditioned or with fan. There is a gang of dogs Jack Terrier Russel that are part of the reception committee and loved by children.
If you have a special interest in watching some specific kind of specie (insect, butterfly, plants, etc) or if you have any specific need, please let us know in advance. High season is from December to April, because it is the time of year when you can watch more animals. It is good to know that during the rainy season there are some excursions that can not be done, due to the great quantity of rain and to the electrical storms.
Maybe the best recommendation that you can give of the Piñero Farm is the book of visits, where all our visitors leave their impressions. An exhaustive review shows all the positive comments of the nature, infrastructure and most of all, of the personnel of the farm. |
