View of Los Frailes
One of the less visited places in Margarita, are the islands of Los Frailes. These islands are the ones you can observe far away from Guacuco, El Tirano, Parguito and El Agua Beach. These islands are deserted and have no more than 20 or 30 habitants, all of them, fishermen. Nevertheless, during the day the quantities of people on the island can double itself with the visitors from Margarita Island. Come along with us in this small trip to Los Frailes.

El Tirano, starting point

Interior of the boat
In order to visit Los Frailes, you must hire a “day tour”, that leaves from El Tirano at 9:00AM. The journey is made in comfortable small boats with capacity for 25 passengers, and with 3 motors off the board. At the beginning the waves are strong and the “peñero” moves itself a lot, but little by little the journey is nicer.

A view of the coast, without beaches

The coast of Los Frailes
After half an tour sailing, we arrive to Los Frailes. This islands do not have beaches, but haver a lot of zones to make “snorkeling”, fish observation with mask.

The cabin that awaits us

The small boat that brings us. At the bottom the shape of Margarita
We finally arrive and make foot in front of a small cabin where we can go to the bathroom, stretch our legs, and specially to see the show of the pelicans that know that tourist always bring food.

Our future lunch

Pelicans waiting for the fish
There was our future lunch. But our hosts always take some additional fish to throw to the pelicans that amaze us capturing the fish that are thrown at them.

The east coast of Margarita (Guacuco, El Tirano, Parguito, Playa El Agua)
Another interesting spectacle is to see the coast of Margarita Island. We were used to see Los Frailes from Margarita, but not Margarita from Los Frailes.

One of the island from Los Frailes
After a first snorkeling round, we return to the cabin for lunch. Fish and chicken with salad, bread and fruit.

Lunch in Los Frailes

A small fisher town

Snorkeling in crystalline waters
After a break, we start our second snorkeling round. This time taking with us the leftovers from lunch that hundreds of fishes eat with joy.

Kid under the water

Finally, we must return. A Coastguard came by to check that we all had our lifesavers on. The trip back to Margarita is a little shorter. We finally reached Margarita, happy of having known Los Frailes.
